Guest List: Julie E. Czerneda’s Top 5 Movie Cravings That Inspire Creativity

czerneda-gulfSince 1997, Canadian author Julie E. Czerneda has shared her love and curiosity about living things through her science fiction, writing about shapechanging semi-immortals, terraformed worlds, salmon researchers and the perils of power. Her latest sci-fi novel, This Gulf of Time and Stars, which kicks off her Reunification trilogy, is now available. What gets her going to put words on the page? Movies, of course — specifically these five, for her Flick Attack Guest List.

I love movies. My other half and I set Friday nights aside to watch something special together, be it new and anticipated, a hopeful discovery, or, often as not, an old favorite. What to watch is a fun and mutual decision.

Unless I’m in the midst of writing a new book.

Early on, that’s no big deal, but once I’m deep into a story’s plot and voice? My writerly hindbrain does not respond well to the Wrong Movie. I avoid anything that makes me cry or get overly emotional; passion’s for the book. Nothing that makes me want to do a rewrite on what I’m seeing either, because my self-editor is already set to full throttle and movies? My relax time is precious.

I actually get movie cravings. My poor husband. Don’t get me wrong, these are favorites of his too, just maybe not to rewatch as frequently.

shadow1. The Shadow (1994)

“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?” I love this movie for many reasons. I knew of the character long ago and have heard some of the radio broadcasts. Not the originals, but my father had and was a fan. The art deco look, the clothes, the actors all work, especially the moments with the cloak and mirrors. Not kidding. Watch and see. I only wish there’d been a sequel.

sleepyhollow2. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

I’m not a fan of horror or supernatural films, but this one calls to me. There’s amazing tone and depth to the landscape, almost a character itself, but it’s Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the determined forensic detective I find riveting. Every word and nuance clicks with me, like something I might have written myself, or wish I had. It’s not often a writer finds themselves so satisfied by someone else. (Aside: Anything by Joss Whedon gives me the same feeling, along with awe.)

tremors3. Tremors (1990)

Fun, silly, adorable, there’s nothing not to enjoy here. Shameless in the best way! The more I watch — and the more they make — the happier I am. (Aside: I’ve seen a trailer for the new one and it looks just as fun, silly, and adorable!) Right up there with Evolution, Galaxy Quest and The Fifth Element as make-you-feel good movies, although our new go-to for that? Guardians of the Galaxy, of course.

pacificrim4. Pacific Rim (2013)

Once in a while, I crave a good SMASH movie. Who doesn’t? I like monsters, monster robots, a rousing story, and saving the day. I’m a big Godzilla fan as well. That “warning: science-fiction violence and peril” is a beacon to me. Not so much any other kind. I dislike war movies or guy-with-a-grudge gore-porn things. I want some wonder and awe in my SMASH. (Yes, I’m a Hulk fan.)

stardust5. Stardust (2007)

Ah, Neil Gaiman, you darling. I try to ration myself and not rewatch this delightful, delicious film too many times in a year. We do cheat by asking any visitor, all innocent, “Have you seen Stardust?” because then we get to see again without guilt. It’s a perfect film. I always feel fantastic after watching it and inspired to write. Can’t argue with that outcome. Happy movie night! —Julie E. Czerneda
